I'm Dave Hughes, I play folk music. I've been doing this solo thing since 2006, and before that I played in a punk rock band down Greenock way. My music is heavily influenced by the singer songwriters of the 1960's and 70's (Dylan, Ochs, Moore, Seeger etc) and also the punk rock scenes of the 70's and 80's. My top three influences have to be Bruce Springsteen, Mischief Brew and Phil Ochs though.
I love playing live, and over the last few years that I've been doing this I've played up and down the UK numerous times. I go out on UK tours every six months or so, in the beginning these were on the Megabus but now I tend to drive. I've supported a lot of the people who listen I to, such as Frank Turner, Chris T-T, and Mischief Brew, and played quite a few festival dates.
Since June of 2009 I have had a backing band in the form of The Renegade Folk Punk Band. We are an all acoustic five piece punk rock political folk band. Most of the gigs that I play in and around Glasgow will feature the band in some form, and as is becoming more common now, we'll sometimes even travel further a field.
With his musical cohorts, stomped his way through an Irish folk flavoured set of post punk songs that would surely have won the approval of Joe Strummer", - Bluesbunny
"If Gaslight Anthem got in a fight with Against Me! at a folk festival" - Wesley Shearer, Scotscribbler
"songs that are too melodic to be the traditional, if not literal definition of punk, but too ramshackle for the folk circuit." - Lisa-Marie Ferla, Last Years Girl
"Righteously riotous" - Ramblings of A Nik
Dave Hughes is a folk singer, originally from just outside Glasgow but now residing in Dundee. He has been playing live for 5 years, and in this time has clocked up almost 200 gigs all around the UK. In the past has played with, amongst others, Frank Turner, Chris T-T, Ricky Warwick (ex-The Almighty, now of Thin Lizzy), Jonah Matranga, and The Indelicates.
Recently signed to London DIY label "Corporate Records" to release third album "Despite the Blackout". A six track acoustic folk record recorded between 2010 and the start of 2011. Backing band "The Renegade Folk Punk Band" features 5 members and sounds like a "punk rock ceilidh".
